Biographical Details

Laura was born in Bath in Somerset. She is the daughter of David Coulter, a former RAF pilot and the late Monica Coulter, a former social worker.

Because of her father’s service career the family moved around a great deal, but at age 11 they settled at Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire where Laura attended secondary school. She later moved to London to attend London University where she obtained a degree in History and a PhD in Romanian History, visiting Romania on many occasions.

Subsequently Laura worked at Index on Censorship magazine as an area specialist in South East Europe, then moved on to work for the late Bernie Grant MP, Labour MP for Tottenham between 1995 and 1997. Since May 1997 Laura has worked as Parliamentary Assistant to John Cryer MP, the Labour MP for Hornchurch Essex.

Laura has been active in the Labour Party since 1986. Her grandparents on her father’s side were lifelong Labour Party supporters and her grandfather Leonard Coulter was a staunch trade unionist. Laura is a member of the Transport and General Workers Union, the GMB and Amnesty International.

In May 2005 she stood as the Labour Parliamentary candidate for Colchester, fighting a strong campaign against the sitting MP Bob Russell. Laura was praised by Colchester Labour Party for being an excellent, hardworking Parliamentary candidate, able to motivate a team of members from all wings of the party. This experience has left her eager to fight the next election also as a Labour candidate, and she is currently seeking a constituency to adopt her.

She currently works for a health and community involvement organisation.

Laura’s interests outside politics are history, reading, theatre, hill-walking, travel and historic towns and gardens.
